Healthy Homes Assessment Tools

The National Center for Healthy Housing (NCHH) has identified three tools to visually assess a home for health hazards.

CEHRC Visual Survey by the Alliance for Healthy Homes as part of its Community Environmental Health Resource Center (CEHRC). This tool is designed to identify serious healthy hazards, communicate them on a single pages, and trigger environmental sampling to confirm or further evaluate the hazards. The National Healthy Homes Training Center and Network uses the CEHRC Visual Survey in the "Making It Work" module of its Essentials for Healthy Homes Practitioners. It also uses for the visual assessment exercise that is a required part of the Healthy Homes Specialist Credential.

Pediatric Environmental Home Assessment (PEHA) by the National Center for Healthy Housing pursuant to a Public Health Capacity Building grant from U.S. EPA's Office of Children's Health. The assessment is designed to help nurses, especially public health nurses and visiting nurses, identified health hazards that may impact their clients. The assessment refers the nurse to an action plan or nursing care plan to advise the nurse on guidance to provide the client and what referrals may be helpful. NCHH developed a popular on-line training based on the PEHA. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency gave NCHH its 2008 Children's Environmental Health Excellence award for the PEHA and the on-line training.

Healthy Homes Inspection Manual by published by CDC and HUD and developed by NCHH. The manual - and the accompanying inspection form - is designed to provide a comprehensive look at health and safety hazards in and around housing. It is a combination of the PEHA (see above) and HUD Physical Assessment Subsystem that it uses as part of its Real Estate Assessment Center. Click here for a copy of the manual.
