Healthy Homes-Related Training
Asbestos
Healthy Homes Training Calendar
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)
and U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) both require
asbestos-specific training for work involving asbestos in housing. The OSHA rules
apply to all construction work and use a very broad definition of construction.
The EPA rule is based on the Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA) -
Title II of the Toxics Substances Control Act.
It establishes a Model Accreditation Program for states. In addition to
schools the MAP applies to public and commercial buildings. This
term includes residential apartment buildings with more than 10 units in the
building.
EPA also has an Asbestos National Emission
Standard for Hazardous Air Pollutants (NESHAP) that imposes additional
requirements. The NESHAP applies to buildings including residential
apartment buildings with more than four units. Some states - Indiana is an
example - apply the MAP training requirements to all buildings covered by the
NESHAP.
