National Healthy Homes Training Center and
Network
Why Become a
Training Partner?
Are you interested in becoming a
training partner in the National Healthy Homes Training Center and Network?
If so, contact Tom Neltner at
tneltner@nchh.org or 443-539-4160 or Susan
Aceti at saceti@nchh.org
or 443-539-4153.
Priorities: NCHH's seeks
training partners that are able to:
-
Provide healthy homes training in areas of the country not already covered
by another trainer. If there is a training partner already in your
area, we encourage you to work with that training partner and can facilitate
that discussion. Click
here to go to the list of existing partners. Currently, NCHH's top geographical priority is the
Rocky Mountain States.
-
Reach a particular type of
health or housing professional who are underserved by the current network.
Please note that the training's success depends on bringing together health
and housing professionals. Training partners need to seek out this
diversity. NCHH's top priorities are home inspectors and building
contractors.
Typical Training Partners:
NCHH sees each training partner as unique. While there are standard
expectations, NCHH strives to adapt to the needs and circumstances of the
training partners. In general, NCHH looks for four characteristics for
partners:
-
Based in or closely affiliated
with a university;
-
Have access to housing, health
and pest control expertise;
-
Commitment to building a healthy
homes community; and
-
Has resources to fund the
initial two offerings of the
Essentials for Healthy Homes Practitioner
course and offer the course at least annually thereafter.
Types of Current Training
Partners: The Training Center has four types of training partners:
-
Schools of Public and
Environmental Health:
Boston University,
Johns Hopkins University,
University of Washington,
East Central University,
University of California at Berkeley,
University of Texas,
University of Illinois at Chicago, and
University of Cincinnati.
-
Coop Extension Services:
University of Georgia,
Louisiana State University,
University of Tennessee,
Mississippi State University,
University of Georgia at Athens, and
Penn State University. We are
also discussing plans with North Carolina State University, University of
Maryland, and University of Florida (partnering with Florida Department of
Healthy).
-
Local Agencies/Coalitions:
Alameda County Lead Poisoning Prevention Program
(partnering with UC-Berkeley),
Los Angeles County Health Department,
City of Houston Health Department
(partnering with University of Texas),
Marion County Health Department, and
Children's Mercy Hospital (partnering with Kansas Health
Department and Kansas City, MO Health Department)
-
Target Audiences:
NeighborWorks,
Alliance for Healthy Homes,
Clearcorps
Benefits to Training Partners:
Thanks to funding from
U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC),
U.S.
Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), and
U.S. Environmental Protection
Agency (EPA), NCHH is able to provide important services to training
partners. It can provide these services as long as it continues to receive
the necessary funding from the agencies.
-
Course Binders and Training
Supplies: NCHH will copy and ship course binders and training
supplies to the training site at no cost to the training partner.
-
Webpage: NCHH will
create a webpage for each training partner and post course information,
logos, registration forms, and links to program information.
-
Registration Form:
NCHH will create an on-line registration form for you and automatically
forward the registration information to you when it is submitted.
-
Annual Meeting:
NCHH covers travel expenses for one representative to participate in the
Training Center's Annual Meeting. It is a great networking
opportunity.
-
Trainer Stipends:
NCHH will provide a stipend of $1250 to a representative of a training
partner to attend one of the
courses (other than
Essentials) offered in another
community. The stipend is $500 if the training is offered locally or
they are sending a second trainer. The trainer must have experience
teaching the
Essentials course. In exchange,
the training partner must provide feedback on the course and offer the
course once in the next twelve months.
-
Local Research:
Upon request, NCHH will research
state and local housing codes and asthma
plans, and
American Housing Survey reports where the
training will be offered. It will provide a summary of its research for
the trainers to use in the training.
-
Evaluation: NCHH
will
provide course evaluation forms and conduct a
post-training survey of participants several months after
completing the course. NCHH will summarize the results of the course
evaluation forms for training partners so they can improve their effort. and
document their impact.
-
Funding: When it is
able to secure additional funding for training, NCHH will first work with
training partners to fund special trainings using a performance-based
formula.
-
Credential:
Training partners can offer the
Healthy Homes Specialist Credential exam to
training participants. Students participating in the first two
offerings of a new training partner's
Essential course only have to pay a $75
fee instead of the standard $150 or $210.
